Canon Maguire Park.
Canon T Maguire, after whom our pitch is named, was born in 1873 and was reared in the Boho area. He was ordained at the end of 1900 in Maynooth. He spent many years in parishes such as Aghabog and Magheracloone in Co Monaghan and involved himself heavily in many of the Gaelic revival activities of early twentieth century Ireland. He was also tireless in his fundraising activities for school and church rebuilding. It was during his period in Aghabog that he became involved in military activities. He developed a close friendship with Michael Collins and became chaplain to the Monaghan Flying Column in the War of Independence. He was attacked regularly by the Black and Tans and on one occasion his car windscreen was shattered by bullets near Aughnacloy

When Michael Collins and the other negotiators were in London in 1920, Fr Maguire had letters from him regularly, always affirming that they would never come back with a ‘divided Ireland’. After the treaty was signed, Collins wired to him asking him to come and dine with him in Dublin. They met in the Gresham Hotel, but Fr Tom would not dine with him as he felt they had let Ireland down. The Boundary Commission, Collins asserted, would unite Ireland. Fr Tom asked what Collins would do if it didn’t. He struck the table and said: “ By heaven’s I’ll go to the hills.” They dined, but Fr Maguire never saw Collins again. Fr Maguire moved to Newtownbutler in 1936 and was still ever active in leading criticism of the political and discriminatory malpractices of the Stormont government. He returned to Derrygonnelly on May 13th 1962, aged 90, to open our playing fields
